Red House Art Studio

by Margaret Truxes-Hixson

My favorite pastime as a child was drawing, which turned into a passion as I grew. Before I started school, my mother started to teach me how to read. She would write short stories, and make them into booklets for me to illustrate as a way to teach me reading comprehension. My father would not allow coloring books or paint-by-number sets in the house; he was afraid it would stifle my creativity.
My father was an artist, as were members on both sides of his family. All of my siblings are also very creative. This was a huge influence on me, and truly cultivated my interest in art. Over the years, I experimented with oils, pen and ink, watercolor and pastels, but when I discovered acrylics, I was hooked. I have been painting with acrylics since 1977, and with the exception of art classes in high school, I have had no formal training; I am self taught. With my husband, Larry’s, encouragement and support, I have been able to get to where I am today.

My process starts with a camera; I like to keep one with me when I’m in the car. After I have chosen what I would like to paint, I work on .25 inch tempered masonite. My themes are nostalgic, mostly landscapes and still lifes. I am often told by patrons at shows that my work reminds them of certain times in their lives, whether it be where their grandmother lived, or something that they did as a child. I would like people to feel transported to a time when life was much simpler.
