Claras Collars was started in 2003. I had been working in the software world as an account rep for nearly 20 years when the company I worked for was purchased by a larger company. In order to keep my job I would have to relocate to another part of the country. Instead of doing this, I decided to take the severance package and find another job in the Pittsburgh area. At this same time we became parents of a bouncing Blue Roan English cocker spaniel puppy. Her name was Clara. I could not find a cute collar for her, so I made one for her and she wore it proudly. As my friends and neighbors noticed her collar, I began making more and more of them for people I knew. I decided to try a small craft show to see how they would sell. The response was over whelming. I decided to not return to the software world but to try and grow a business making collars for pets since I loved it so much. That was 13 years ago and we are still going strong. Revenues continue to increase every year and we are now doing around 38 shows a year. We have now expanded our product line to include cat collars, leashes harnesses, flowers and bowties. Several years ago, my husband retired early and also works in our business. I have lots of help from family members to be able to keep up with the demand of our products.
All collars, leashes and harnesses are handmade in our large shop in our
home. All items are made with 100% cotton or flannel, decor bond
fusible interfacing and Tex 40 perm core thread. We have over 500
fabrics in our shop and take thousands of collars to our shows. We love
customers to walk in and be mesmerized by the amount of collars we
have for them to choose from.
We start by cutting all fabrics to specification for a particular collar. We
then iron on interfacing. The amount of interfacing is determined by
the thickness of the fabrics. Once the interfacing is in place we sew the
strip. Once the strips are sewn we attach buckles, a steel welded D ring
and triglide to the item and tack the ends. Harnesses and leashes are
made the same way. All items are sewn on an industrial sewing
machine. The items are all tagged with a cute Claras Collars tag and
tied on the D ring with paw print ribbon
